Using orchestral strings, vanguard soundscapes and collected field recordings,Philippe Petit’s A Scent of Garmambrosia takes us into a dense, cinematic world that mixes acoustic instrumentation with digital filtering, swaying and unfolding amid the psycho-film-noir syntax of a Lynchean universe.

The album continues Petit’s investigations into the boundaries of extant, contemporary scoring through the lens of modern cinema. These ideas were initiated in his album Henry: The Iron Man (Beta Lactam Ring Records) and continued with "Fiends With A Face" his duo with James Johnston (Dirter Promotion).
A Scent of Garmambrosia’s departure point is David Lynch’s groundbreaking series Twin Peaks, where Lynch defines the word Garmonbozia as “pain and suffering that is consumed,” and seems to be either a food or type of drug for the lodge inhabitants.
In ancient Greek mythology, Ambrosia is the food and drink of the gods that confers immortality upon whoever consumes it.
Thus, Petit’s Garambrosia is a sonic hybrid of the two—a nectar that contains the agonies of both humanity and deity.

Pursuing a tradition he had started with his "Reciprocess" project, given away with The Wire magazine issue 301, Petit is benefiting from the talent of many of his friends-musicians without whom nothing could be possible and emphasising that according to him music is a collaborative affair:

One might have heard of Swedish cellist Helena Espvall from her work with the recent crop of neo-psych folk artists like Espers, Fursaxa, as well as being a member of Vashti Bunyan's touring band. She has also released some solo works thru Museum Fire and Pax recordings.

Bela Emerson is an innovative and prolific performer of electric cello, electronics, tenor viol and musical saw, who creates passionate, evocative and spontaneous music of no definable genre. She has four solo releases (vinyl/CD); the latest one, "Hespera" appeared on BiP_HOp to great acclaim.

Raphaelle Rinaudo plays the harp, combing and messing up her strings cautiously knitting melodies that she later distorts by pulling the chords. The atmosphere thus carefully woven, cannot but convene the repressed temptation of the sirens’ song… Raphaelle also plays in the Pierre-Yves Macé ensemble whose albums have been released via Tzadik & Sub Rosa + is an active member of Strings Of Consciousness.

Even if she is only 22, Maria Grigoryeva has already won several International competition and composed symphonies, quartets, solo-pieces for different instruments, different ensembles, and a lot of music for percussion and harp.

James Johnston is the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and founding member of influential UK band Gallon Drunk. He plays with Krautrock legends Faust, was a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds from 2002 to 2008, and has recorded and toured with a variety of other musicians including Lydia Lunch, Barry Adamson, Dot Allison…

Andy Diagram paints soundscapes with his trumpet. He blends all sorts of colourful sounds, and then mixes them in his “echo chambers” along with the help of a harmonizer. In the last 20 years Andy's unique style has allowed him to join many bands such as Pere Ubu, Dislocation Dance, Pale Fountains, James, Honkies, Frank Black (Pixies), and permanently Spaceheads, and David Thomas' 2 Pale Boys.

Fred Lonberg-Holm is an improvisor and composer living in Chicago. Principle projects include his Valentine trio and Lightbox Orchestra. He has recorded solo records for the Emanem and FlyingAspidistra labels. He is also a member of The Peter Broetzmann Chicago 10tet, Vandermark 5, Frame Quartet and Fast Citizens.
